Onwards, then…

Fantasy Football Tips Gameweek 20: Midfielders

This writer thought he was being clever, checking Chelsea message boards to see how much midfield rotation might occur over recent games at home to Swansea City and Liverpool.

Breathing space for Eden Hazard was mentioned as a possibility, so yours truly took him out of his team in exchange for the indefatigable-seeming Yaya Touré.

Hazard of course went on to both start and score in each game, while Touré played only one without doing anything of significance.

C’est la Fantasy vie, n’est-ce pas?

Suffice it to say, Hazard is looking increasingly essential even at £10m – his eight goals and seven assists make him the highest points-grossing midfielder thus far, just ahead of Touré in fact.

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has been repaying our faith in him with two goals at West Ham United and an assist at Newcastle United.

With the Gunners at home to struggling Cardiff City on new year’s day, we’re backing the £9.5m winger to continue his flying return to first team action.

Liverpool tend to rack up large scores at home to mid-to-bottom-of-the-table sides, although Hull City have shown themselves to be no pushovers.

After all, Steve Bruce’s men triumphed 3-1 over the Reds in the recent reverse fixture, and the Tigers are coming off the back of a 6-0 thrashing of Fulham.

Still, Liverpool’s prolific goalscoring at Anfield could make useful additions out of in-form duo Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling, bargains at £6.2m and £5.1m apiece.

Keep your eye on Everton’s James McCarthy – the former Wigan Athletic man has three assists in his last three games, so he could prove to be decent value at just £4.9m.

Fantasy Football Tips Gameweek 20: Strikers

Quite clearly, Liverpool’s home game against Hull dictates that Luis Suárez should be your captain.

Now that’s out of the way, we can have a little look around elsewhere and recommend Manchester United’s £7.1m Danny Welbeck, with four goals in as many matches, as a smart move for the penny-pinchers.

United are at home to Tottenham Hotspur, for whom the £7.7m Emmanuel Adebayor is bang back in form, with two goals and two assists in the three games since his AVB-decreed absence.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Anelka scored twice on his return to West Bromwich Albion action in the 3-3 draw at West Ham United.

If he can get a run going, he’d be a serious bargain at just £5.1m, as it is for the time being.

Popular picks Loïc Rémy and Romelu Lukaku both ended five-game barren streaks over the festive period, so do with them what you will.
